We have been kept busy in recent months at our Luang Prabang Rescue centre by
the arrival of four rescued Asiatic Black Bear cubs. The first two cubs arrived
in April after being confiscated by the local police during a routine traffic
check in Luang Prabang town.
Found bundled inside a tube strapped onto a driver's motorbike they were
dehydrated, malnourished and extremely traumatised. Both cubs have now recovered
well from their ordeal and are flourishing under the care of the keepers at the
centre. One female and one male, they have been named Bob and Bindi as a mark of
our appreciation for all the support the fund has received from Wildlife
Warriors.
Our next two arrivals were confiscated in June by the local government from a
village in Bokeo, Northern Laos. It is likely that had these bears not been
rescued they would have been smuggled out of Laos for a life of torture on a
bile farm. Many of the bears at the sanctuary arrive as very frightened and
neglected young cubs after their mothers have been killed by poachers.
These are the lucky ones who have been given a second chance at life. Another
male and female they have been named ‘Nam' (which means water in Lao) and ‘Fei'
(which means fire). Possibly the most laid back bears we have ever had they seem
to take everything in their stride and are loving life in our forested
sanctuary.
All four cubs are now mixed together and apart from the odd squabble over highly
prized honey-dipped bamboo sticks are getting along well.
