Bear of the Month - Apple - August 2008
On the morning of 24th February 2007 Free the Bears Fund received a (not totally unexpected but) very precious gift. It was discovered that Deena a 13 year old female Sun bear at the Phnom Tamao Sanctuary in Cambodia had given birth to a tiny cub. She had been sharing an enclosure with Aural, a large male and Deena's behaviour had been a little unusual over the past few months so we had begun to suspect that she might be pregnant and what a joy when she produced a healthy little boy.

Deena took to motherhood immediately and she and her little one who became known as Apple have been living in their own special enclosure for the last year or so.

Apple is now almost 18 months old and already weighs more than 40kg. Despite this he still suckles from his mother who weighs just a few more kilos than her son! He readily eats all of the various foodstuffs offered including fresh coconuts, ice treats and like all Sun bears he just loves honey.

We will be looking at separating Apple from Deena sometime this year, once this is done he will be placed with other Sun bear cubs his own age. Apple is a confident little bear, fairly steady in nature although wary of human, like his father Aural he avoids coming indoors and prefers to stay out in his forested enclosure 24hours a day.
