| Bear of the Month - Pinky - April 2008 |
Pinky was rescued from her life as a 'dancing' bear in December 2002 when her
former owner agreed to surrender her as part of our Kalandar Rehabilitation
Programme. When she first arrived at the Agra Bear Rescue Facility in India she
was 4 years old and weighed a mere 50kgs. 6 years on Pinky is a very healthy
94kgs and full of confidence.
Pinky resides in Enclosure No2 which has access to a large free ranging area,
with many shady trees for climbing and pools for taking a refreshing dip. She is
one of the most energetic and agile bears in her group and since her
rehabilitation she has developed excellent climbing skills. Indeed, there isn't
a tree in her whole enclosure that she hasn't scaled.
Her close friend Maharani shares this love of heights and they can often be seen
together in the branches urging each other higher. Perhaps her dearest friend
though is Raja an old male bear. He is the only male in this enclosure and Pinky
is very much his favourite. At the end of the day they are to be found together
in Raja's preferred den (No3) snuggled up together.
Like all bears Pinky just adores her food and her absolute favourite fruit is
watermelon which she sucks and slurps with audible joy. She also enjoys roti
(Indian multigrain bread) and porridge but only if they are drenched with honey!
